Well what possibly could an occult shop sell as by definition occult means unknown knowledge so therefore how can any shop sell unknown knowledge. Well the truth is that it cannot sell such an impossible substance as this. What an occult shop will sell though are items to help you gain access to, not unknown knowledge, but unknown or should we say not yet scientifically validated, energies. It all probably makes sense on a quantum level and what we call magick or the occult will eventually turn out to be just another branch of physics we as of yet do not understand.
So, you enter said occult shop and buy say an oil. First off the oil has been labelled Fast luck and that very labelling process energises the oil towards that end, then the occultist adds essential oils then adds their own vibrations to the mix, the occult shop owner then adds his own ritual/prayer or whatever to this mix of energies and you then receive the oil. For you it is a beacon sent to attract your desire and its energies (that of the occult oil) will merge with those surrounding you and pull your desire to you. Usually this works on a small scale bringing something near by such as a sexual partner, or small monetary win or present. But can bring greater rewards over time as you are manipulating the very fabric of the universe to twist and turn it to your pattern, to what you want to get out of this life.
So, what should you but, what will work best for you, the answer is nobody knows but you and you don't know because you have not tried all the items to see which works best. So anybody wanting to save time and energy should have a go at each area and see what works best. Try an oil, an incense, a spell, petition the help of a deity, meditate, try to manipulate some bodies thoughts - do the lot, don't specialise until you know what your strengths are, until then try everything.
Many occult shops are a bit boring these days, they often sell nothing but mass produced items to shop (calling themselves pagan or newage)for and these are not even stocked by some shops and are instead delivered straights from the manufacture thus offering little of real value. Some items such as large list of oils or incense can be made by the genuine occultist and will be of more value. these occultists spend time and energy preparing a product at the correct planetary hours and using exacting shop stock ingredients rather than something that has been on a shelf for months.
In the past there have been real occult shop, stocking books and equipment but these are few and far between, instead you now get new age shops with bright objects to catch your eye and make you feel all magickal but with very little real occult power. Back in the Victorian period you would get curiosity shops and book shops that did a range of occult books and items but these have long passed from memory and replaced by the newage crystal type shops of today. Real magick is still practiced today but by small groups and individuals, they make their own occult products and only shop for what they really cannot make themselves. So a real occultist would always make their own oils and incense and would have to buy crystals from a supplier. But even crystals although going in and out of fashion were very hard to obtain until the 1970's when they became popular again. Infact we now live in teh early 21st century in a very superficial age for occult shops, the so called New Age has watered down magick and turned it into a series of crystals, books on angels and harry potter style paraphernalia. its al a bit sad really and similar to whathappened with Christinanity. orginally people took that religion very seriosuly, practicing prayer and church daily, now its just a thing to do occasionally. So occult shopping it just a watered down version of teh real thing and what it popular is also the most superficial.
Any how, we do not need to worry to much about this as the new range of occult shops and supplies can be a good way to get some nice products for you beginning magickal career. Its handy to be able to get a nice brass pentagram and altar cloth, a good incense burner, some exotic herbs normally not available and a talisman or two. its not all doom and gloom and with the internet there are places like http://www.sacred-texts.com that give you thousands of free pages of out-of-print occult books that you can download and learn the basics yourself. the recent wicca type books are very superficial and tend to avoid the best types of magick.
For me the worst kind of supplier is the drop shipper, they will not say that this is there type of business but its horrible. Basically they are a person or two who never stock any items or even touch the items they sell. Although they may seem to offer a huge range, they are actually just a person and a computer and when you place an order at their occult supplies shop they then contact a series of agents who actually do stock the items, these agents then send the items on to you. You can usually tell a dropshipper as they have a large range of products, expensively priced and they do not give definite shipping times, just say 28 days are something. Now a real occult supplies shop will say how long it takes to get an item to you and three to five days should be the maximum as they will have to make the products them selves so a little time is needed. Also those offering same day dispatch have probably not the time to make you occult shop items so probably have them pre-made and ready to pack. This is not so good as its better that an oil etc is made once the occultist knows who they are making the oil for as this increase the energies the occultist passes on to the oil.
